The atmosphere of the game's environments seriously highlights the overall feelings of isolation and gives life to the phrase "wtf was that?" Overall, this game demonstrates how to do it right when you want to make a scary, well-developed game and at the same time incorporate enough action to keep players from getting bored. The creators did a fantastic job of preserving the essence of survival/horror while introducing modern gameplay mechanics and situations. This game is a phenomenal entry to the shrinking genre of survival horror. Unique objectives will find you exploring the massive vessel end to end, frantically searching for a way to get off the ship before it is too late. Stasis and Kinesis powers granted by Isaac's suit give players multiple ways to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. A rich crafting and upgrade system introduces light RPG elements to the game, and the third-person shooter mechanics are polished and feel natural. Everywhere you look, the environment in this game is warning the player to turn back before it is too late, or you too may end up like the crew of the dying Ishimura.Terrifyingly crafted environments aside, "Dead Space" for the PS3 is one of those games that would be nowhere without its excellent gameplay and design. Quiet hallways echo loudly with Isaac's footsteps or the skittering approach of a new enemy emerging from the shadows. Scattered body parts, blood, and a lost child's toy are all placed to evoke one critical, overwhelming emotional response: fear. Every part of the ship screams that something is wrong. Drawing inspiration from science fiction horror movies like "Alien" and "The Thing," this game makes use of its environment to evoke terror in its players. Like all great horror games, the danger feels real to the very vulnerable Isaac as players must scavenge tools, parts, and power cores in order to create weapons to kill the infestation flooding the Ishimura. The aesthetics and sound play an enormous role in bringing the horror taking place on the Ishimura to life, and the PS3 version takes full advantage of the system's advanced hardware. He is an engineer with no formal weapons training with only his knowledge of engineering and intelligence to guide him. Isaac discovers something horrific has taken place deep within the ship, and he must race to not only repair its damaged systems and escape but uncover the fate of his loved ones on board the doomed ship.In "Dead Space," Isaac is not the genre-typical combat-hardened hero. Players take the role of Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent to investigate why communications have ceased from the USG Ishimura. The designers at Electronic Arts Redwood Shores Studio weave a chilling narrative with galactic implications aboard the flagship mining vessel in a futuristic fleet tasked with dismantling uninhabited planets to use for resources back on earth. Since much of the ship is damaged, it lacks oxygen and gravity, creating environmental puzzles and forcing players to make choices regarding upgrades.Setting the bar for future next-gen survival horror games, "Dead Space" creates a frightening environment for its players to explore, interact with, and ultimately be afraid of. Gamers can loot corpses for credits to gain access to restricted areas, upgrade your character's spacesuit, and kill the deadly and terrifying Necromorphs. The narrative is in classic survival horror fashion through messages scrawled in blood, the dying utterances of mortally wounded crewmembers, and any discarded logs or journals that players find. Featuring crisp graphics on the PS3, the Dead Space’s action takes place from a third-person perspective.
